WHY DO REFEREES MATTER?
In every soccer match, there are three teams on the field: the two opposing teams and the referee team. Without skilled referees, matches lose their structure, safety, and enjoyment. Referees play an essential role in ensuring fair play and an enjoyable experience for all participants. However, becoming and staying a referee requires substantial investment in training, time, and equipment.
Our mission is to ensure that referee training remains accessible and affordable, but with rising training costs, we need your support to avoid increasing registration fees for referees who are already investing heavily in their passion for officiating. By donating to the Minnesota Referee Program, you are directly contributing to the recruitment and training of new referees, the retention of experienced referees through ongoing development opportunities, and the continued growth and development of soccer across Minnesota.
THE COSTS OF BECOMING A REFEREE
Aspiring referees face significant expenses even before stepping onto the field:

Registration Fee: $60 per referee.

Uniform Costs: $80–$150, depending on personal preferences.
To maintain the high standards of officiating in Minnesota, referees must also undergo extensive training. Training helps them prepare for the challenges of officiating, whether as assistant referees or center referees.
OUR TRAINING PROGRAMS
The Minnesota SRC (State Referee Committee) is dedicated to providing comprehensive training to referees of all levels.

Shadow Events: New referees are guided by experienced senior referees in a supportive environment. These shadow events cost around $300-$400 but are invaluable in helping referees build confidence and skills.

Field Training Sessions: Designed for first-year entry-level referees, these sessions provide hands-on training in a controlled environment. They cost $300-$400 for groups of up to 40 referees.
