2021 Certification FAQ

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, US Soccer has announced that any referee whose registration for 2020 was completed has been rolled over through ALL of 2021. This page is designed to provide some answers to common questions on this ppolicy and its effect in Minnesota.

I finished my 2020 Certification and was approved by the SRA. Do I need to do anything for 2021?

You if your 2020 USSF Status shows Approved, you do not need to pay anything or take any further tests. Your USSF Approval will be prolonged through December 2021 for no fee.

However... Minnesota will be implementing the 2020-21 Law Changes as soon as play resumes. You have until August 1, 2020 to complete the 2020-21 Law Changes presentation on the Online Material page. If you have not completed that presentation by that date, your "Current Eligibility" status will switch to Ineligible. You will be inelgible to officiate matches in Minnesota until you comlete that presentation (it is only 13 minutes long, so this is a scant amount of work to remain eligible through 2021!).

When do the 2020-21 Law Changes go into effect in Minnesota?

We will be utilizing the changes immediately when US Soccer-affiliated play re-commences.

Who needs to watch the 2020-21 Law Changes presentation?

ALL certified officials will be required to watch this presentation by August 1 if they wish to be eligible to work USSF-affiliated matches in Minnesota. This includes BOTH new and returning officials.

I never finished my 2020 certification... if I finish before June 24 when will my certification expire?

Once you are approved by the SRA, your account will be submitted to US Soccer for 2020 certification. You will automatically be certified for 2021 as well and will be certified through December 31, 2021.

What if I wait to finish my work after the June 24 deadline?

All work on accounts that are incomplete are being rolled over into 2021. You will not lose credit for any work. If you finish after the deadline, you will be approved for 2021 and will be certified through December 31, 2021.

Can I get a refund instead of completing work or rolling my certification over?

If you have not been approved for 2020, you may request a refund through the COVID Refund Request page. This will be a partial refund ($60-65) and must be requested no later than June 26, 2020. Once you receive a refund, if you opt to certify for 2021 you will need to pay the full $80 registration fee again.

EXCEPTION: Enrollees in the MYSA Initiative are ineligible for refunds and must finish work by June 21, 2020 (not including the 2020-21 Law Changes).

If your USSF Status for 2020 is listed as Approved, you are ineligible for a refund but, as stated above, your certification has been extended for a full 12 months, from December 31, 2020 to December 31, 2021.

I certified in another state for 2020 and that state is not offering the certification extension... can my 2021 registration be transferred to Minnesota so I can take advantage of the USSF extension?

No. The extension is only applicable within the state othat you certified in for 2020.

For example, if you certified for 2020 in Wisconsin and Wisconsin is choosing not to offer this extension (aside: we have no idea which other states are participating in this extension program, Wisconsin is only being used here as a hypothetical), you cannot transfer your certification to Minnesota and then have your certification extended. You can certifiy for 2021 in Minnesota, but you will have to pay the 2021 registration fees of $80 to do so.
